Celebrating Black History Month: Lonnie Johnson – From Science to The Super Soaker
Award-winning engineer Lonnie Johnson was known in NASA circles for his groundbreaking aeronautical work. He came to national acclaim, however, for designing one of America‘s favorite toys: the Super Soaker water gun. Since licensing the product in 1989, the Super Soaker has generated over $200 million in retail sales, and was the top-selling toy in the U.S. in 1991 and 1992.

When they say “no sex in the Champagne Room,” they mean it.
A Georgia federal judge is out of jail on $50,000 bond and facing federal charges after being arrested for allegedly buying cocaine and other drugs from an exotic dancer with whom he was involved over the past several months.
Jack T. Camp Jr., a senior U.S. District judge, was arrested a week ago near Sandy Springs, Ga. and accused of purchasing cocaine, marijuana, and prescription medicine from a stripper he met at the Goldrush Showbar in Atlanta, according to the FBI.
Their relationship began when he visited the club and got a private dance from her. He came back the next night for another dance, plus sex, which evolved into a drug and sex-laced tryst. A federal affidavit says the judge sometimes purchased the dope from her and at other times went with the dancer as a pair to buy from other parties. (Get the rest of the story at Time.com)

In the early 1960s Tosh met Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer through his vocal teacher, Joe Higgs. While perfecting their sound, the trio would often play together on street corners in a Jamaican slum called Trenchtown.
As Marley preached his “One Love” message, Tosh railed against the hypocritical “shitstem”, and became a favourite target of the Jamaican police. He proudly wore the scars that he had received from the beatings he endured.[citation needed] Always taking the militant approach, he released Equal Rights in 1977.
Along with Bob Marley in the late 1960s, Peter Tosh became an adherent of the religion known as Rastafari. As genuine Rastas refrain from consuming meat, which is known as Ital, it worked for Tosh since he was already a vegetarian. Tosh, like Marley, subsequently became a member of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Irish filmmaker George Clarke stumbled upon a strange sight when watching the DVD extras for Charlie Chaplin‘s film The Circus. During footage from the film’s premiere, a woman walks by, holding something to her ear and seemingly speaking into it. It looks like a cell phone, and she’s using it like a cell phone, but is it a cell phone? She couldn’t have picked one up at a local store, since the footage was from 1928.

LOS ANGELES — A jury on Thursday convicted Anna Nicole Smith’s psychiatrist and boyfriend of conspiracy in a prescription drug case involving the former Playboy model and reality TV star but acquitted the doctor who prescribed a plethora of drugs for her.
Prosecutors contended during the nine-week trial that the defendants were dazzled by Smith’s glamor and filled her demands for prescription drugs to protect their insider status in her personal life and her celebrity world.
The jury was asked to decide if the three defendants were trying to relieve Smith’s emotional and physical pain or were feeding her addiction to prescription drugs.
“The jury found she was not an addict,” Garofolo, Smith’s lawyer, said.
The only conviction against Smith’s boyfriend-lawyer Howard K. Stern was for giving false names and acting by fraud to obtain prescriptions. He was acquitted of seven other charges.
As he left the courthouse, Stern told reporters, “Everything relating to the appropriateness of the medication I was acquitted of.”
He said the lone conviction came for trying to protect Smith’s privacy.
Along with conspiracy, psychiatrist Khristine Eroshevich was convicted of unlawfully prescribing Vicodin by fraud. The jury deadlocked on several counts against her.

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN) — At least 112 people were killed and 502 others were missing after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Sumatra on Monday and triggered a tsunami, Indonesian officials said Tuesday.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake generated a “significant” tsunami. Some of the missing may include people who are unaccounted for after fleeing to higher ground, said Henri Dori Satoko, the head of the Mentawai Islands parliament.
Although communication with remote areas was difficult, some witnesses in West Sumatra reported seeing a wave 6 meters (nearly 20 feet) high. Other reports described the tsunami as being about 3 meters (almost 10 feet) high.
Satoko said at least one village with a population of about 200 people was swept away, with only 40 people recovered.
The numbers of dead and injured were in flux because information was trickling in from remote parts of Indonesia, a country made up of myriad islands. The area believed hardest-hit was the Mentawai Islands, a popular surfing destination. In particular, Pagai Island was thought to have been affected, said Ita Balanda, a program manager for World Vision in Padang.
